Access for Infants and Mothers
Access for Infants and Mothers (AIM) is a low-cost health coverage program for uninsured pregnant women whose family incomes are too high to qualify for no-cost Medi-Cal and who do not have access to private health insurance or their health insurance does not cover pregnancy related services.
Who is eligible?
- Pregnant women who are not more than 30 weeks pregnant at the time their applications are received
- Pregnant women who are California residents for at least six months
- Pregnant women who are uninsured for their pregnancies or have maternity deductibles over $500, and who meet the income requirements.
- Family income between 200% to 300% of the Federal Income Guidelines (FIG).
What does it cost?
- The cost is 1.5% of the families' annual incomes. For example, a woman with a family size of three with monthly household income of $3,000 would pay a total of $540 for AIM coverage.
- Families will be required to pay separate monthly premiums for the newborn's coverage through the Healthy Families Program. The amount of the monthly premium depends on which plan the newborn is enrolled into, but will not exceed $15 per child per month.
Does immigration status matter?
No, but applicants must be California residents for at least six months before applying.
What benefits are covered?
- Pregnant women receive all medically necessary services while pregnant (not just maternity related care), including hospitalization, from the time they are accepted into the program until 60 days postpartum. AIM does not cover dental services.
- Newborns receive all medically necessary health, dental, and vision services through the Healthy Families Program, including infant care check-ups, sick-child care and hospitalization, up to their second birthdays.
